Overview

Acne scars are the lasting changes in skin texture or colour that can follow inflammatory acne.

They develop when breakouts damage the skin’s deeper layers, disrupting collagen production during healing. This can result in atrophic scarring such as rolling, boxcar or icepick scars, or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Factors like severe or prolonged acne, delayed treatment and skin picking can increase the likelihood of scarring. While some improvement may occur naturally over time, established acne scars often persist without targeted treatment. They commonly affect the face, but can also appear on the back and chest, leading to uneven texture and tone.
